Art history is the discipline to study art objects in their historical development and context. Basically, the study of art history is the research on any popular artist, their cultural and social contributions. It includes many methods for studying visual arts. The most common usage of art history is art theory and its criticism. Hence, many art historians divided the study of art history into three main categories such as the connoisseurs, the critics, and the academic art historians.
The term art criticism refers to establishing a relative artistic value based on the individual's work compared to others style or movement. Whereas, the term art theory means, fundamental nature of art and is closely related to aesthetics investigating the enigma and discovering the true essence of the beauty.
The approaches of various art historians differs from each other but there are a few common approaches that form the backbone of the field, such as:
- Formal Analysis: The focus is on the object in question.
- Stylistic Analysis: It is the combined study of formal elements into a coherent style.
- Inconographical Analysis: It mainly focuses on the particular design of the object.
Hence, Art history is a superb introduction to the world of history and culture. For some, it is a place to refine their skills in art writing and analysis while for others, the study serve as a way to enter into the profession of art history.
