Computers have revolutionized the way we communicate, work and even our lifestyle. They have made a significant impact on how we research and gather information and even affected the way we socialize. This little box enables us to do complex mathematical calculations in a few seconds, interact with people thousands of miles away and get updated information about almost anything under the sun.
Most histories of the modern computer begin with the Analytical Engine made by Charles Babbage following the mathematical ideas of George Boole, the mathematician who first stated the principles of logic inherent in today's digital computer. Babbage's assistant, Ada Lovelace, is said to have introduced the ideas of program loops and is sometimes considered the first programmer. Apart from mechanical calculators, the first really usable computers began with the vacuum tube, which sped up with the invention of the transistor. This vacuum tube then became embedded in large numbers in integrated circuits, ultimately making possible the relatively low-cost personal computer.
Today, simple computers may be made small enough to fit into a wristwatch and be powered from a watch battery.
