When discussing customs, it is important to distinguish between custom and custom duty. What is customs duty? It is a kind of indirect tax which is realized on goods of international trade.
Customs on the other hand, is an authority or agency in a country responsible for collecting and safeguarding customs duties and for controlling the flow of goods including animals, personal effects and hazardous items in and out of a country. Depending on local legislation and regulations, the import or export of some goods may be restricted or forbidden, and the customs agency enforces these rules.
Customs procedures at many international airports, divide arriving passenger into two channels-Red and Green. Passengers with goods to declare (carrying items above the permitted customs limits or prohibited items) should go through the Red Channel. Passengers with nothing to declare (carrying goods within the customs limits only and not carrying prohibited items) can go through the Green Channel. A fine is levied on those who make a false declaration that are not carrying items of sensitive nature.
In this category, we have tried to gather resources which shed light on customs duties. On a lighter note, we have also given links to duty-free shops.
