Since ancient times, mankind has always had some understanding of what is “right” and what is “wrong” and based on it is a conception of law, although law was not formalized until much later. In the olden days, there was much emphasis on moral law with practices such as ostracization and banishment of the law-breaker being followed.
Whatever be the modes of punishment, the existence of law and order is necessary for us to feel safe and secure in our homes. While most laws today are restricted to within the boundaries of a country, international laws and human rights commission enable the arrest and punishment of offenders who try to flee from the place where they have committed a crime.
Law serves to define states and countries, regulate the activities of government and transactions in trade, enable suing for malpractice and deliver justice. To implement and enforce the law and provide services to the public, a government's bureaucracy, the military and police are vital.
The realization that should be adequately accessible to everyone, led to the establishment of law courts and law practice. Moreover, the existence of law is necessary for modern civil society to exist. The civil society in turn is the basis for people to form opinions and lobby for changes in law or framing of new laws.
