It is the generic term for electric switch, which is used to actuate by very little physical force. Because of their low cost and extreme durability they are very common. To activate the switch a stiff metal strip is bent internally. The moment the switch is activated a distinctive clicking sound and crisp feeling is produced. The strip moves back to its original state the minute the pressure is removed.
Game joysticks and computer mouse are some of the common applications for micro switches. They are generally used in tamper switches on gate valves on fire sprinkler systems and other water pipe systems. The boobytrapped improvised explosive devices for anti-handling devices, which is manufactured by paramilitary groups also make use of Microswitches.
One of the most basic features of micro switches is that a small movement creates a large movement for actuator buttons. If micro switches are produced successfully it also exhibit hysteresis, which means a small reversal of actuator is not sufficient to actually reverse the contacts. Only the combination of these characteristics help to accomplish a clean and reliable interruption to the switched circuit.
In 1932, Peter McGall invented the first micro switch. Today, the micro switches technology have become quite popular. The technology has given birth to modern electronics and manufacturing, paving the way for millions of products and applications.
