The term telecommunication refers to the transmission of signals over a long distance for the purpose of communication. Radio, television and telegraphs are some of the common examples for telecommunications. It is a very broad category. Since, the term includes the electronic transmission of voice, data and image information. There are basically four basic types of telecommunication mediums such as:
- coaxial cable
- radio
- wire pair
- fiber optics.
Hence, network used in telecommunication includes one or more long distance networks. Many people consider field of telecommunication as one of the most lucrative industries. Studies reveal that about 140 million households in US, have telephones and 70% have internet and mobile subscribers. According to the 2006, report the telecommunication industry generated a revenue of $1.2 trillion. However, this growth should be just viewed as economic growth.
The design of telecommunication system is such that it would make an impact one way or another on the service quality goals. There are basically two international standardization agencies for telecommunications such as the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) and ISO (International Standardization Organization). Both these agencies are responsible for the establishment and dissemination of telecommunication standards. In industrialized nation, telecommunication has become an integral part of our lives.
