Most of us often get confused between proofreading and editing, and think that both the terms have same meaning. But, these two are different stages of a revision process of writing.

Editing and proofreading are different from revising a copy. When we talk about editing, it is the process that starts immediately after your are through with the first draft. It includes steps like re-reading the copy, seeing if its organized and the two consecutive paragraphs are linked to each other. Focus is also paid on sentence formation and small elements of text. Editing can be done on several levels of the text.

Proofreading is the final stage of the process of editing, and it focuses on the surface errors like grammatical mistakes, punctuation and spellings. Writers go through this process only after completing other editing revisions. Main motive of proofreading is to make the page more presentable.

The only similarity between both these stages of revision is that they require careful and close reading. But one must remember that these concentrate on different writing aspects and use different techniques.
