From a wide range of natural stones, Granite and marble are two categories that have got wide use in construction, architectural and many other areas.

If we talk about Granite, it is a widely occurring, felsic, igneous rock with a medium to coarse texture. The stone is available in grey, pink, black and many more colors, depending upon its chemistry and mineralogy.

Granite is present in major parts of the continental crust of earth in the form of small stock masses. This natural stone is believed to be present in the earth crust since Precambrian age. Because of its abundance, the stone was earlier used for building foundations in New England. Now a days, Granite is excessively used as flooring tiles in buildings and other structures. The better durability and resistance of the stone to acid rain, makes it a better replacement to marble. Polished Granite is also used in making kitchen counter top, as it has aesthetic qualities and long life.

Of the thousands of varieties of natural stone, marble is regarded as one of the most varied, because of different families and appearance. It is a metamorphic rock, usually made of limestone, that has been subjected to excessive heat, pressure and water for a long period of time. Recrystallization occurring under different external influences is the main reason for the distinct appearance of this stone

There are different families of marble, which are usually named after the quarry where they are found. For example, Makrana marble comes from a quarry called Makrana in Rajasthan, India. Location of a quarry also affects the quality of the marble in terms of hardness, index of refraction and homogeneity.
