In most of the countries in Europe, the term school signifies primary education that lasts between 6-9 years, depending on the country. This rule also applies to secondary education, which are mainly divided between gymnasium and vocational schools. Though, the term school rarely is used to describe tertiary education in Europe, except for some high schools to describe colleges and universities.

Most of these schools are co-educational offering nursery, primary and secondary education. These schools are basically established to provide education to children of personnel of the European institution for free. National governments are responsible for the appointment of full-time teachers.

In October 1953, Luxembourg, The European Schools project was established. This project was first started for the children of the officials of the European Coal and Steel Community. It was an experiment towards the standardization of teaching standards among different European countries.

In the same year, Jean Monnet defined the aim of the school as “"Educated side by side, untroubled from infancy by divisive prejudices, acquainted with all that is great and good in the different cultures, it will be borne in upon them as they mature that they belong together. Without ceasing to look to their own lands with love and pride, they will become in mind Europeans, schooled and ready to complete and consolidate the work of their fathers before them, to bring into being a united and thriving Europe.”
